It's OK, I'd be grumpy too if I didn't own a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles poster.

Monthly Report Cards: February 2015 GOALS

Ah yes, February, the month where we are bombarded by couples, cupids and the colour red. This is also the month where us singles feel obliged to prove our indifference by reposting this meme again and again:

Chin up kids, February is a short month!

And not for the main event, my to do list:

Finish my latest sewing project
More on this later. If it goes well I’ll share some pictures J

Take a Valentine’s Day themed photograph
I have an idea, but I’m not sure if I can do it the way I have it pictured… We’ll see!

Finish editing my story.
I am almost done draft #2… Yes I have it saved in more than one place. I’ve learned my lesson.

Do some baking

I made a chocolate zucchini cake in January (best thing ever (pictured above)), maybe I’ll take another stab at cake baking this month J

Cosplaying Hiccup : Production Diary - the Helmet

Hello hello! I've started on my fem! Hiccup cosplay from HTTYD 2. So of course I wanted to blog about it :) I was tempted to call this a tutorial, but a proper tutorial would have helpful information like an accurate supply list and a pattern. I can’t be bothered to make a supplies list, and my pattern looks like this:

Helpful, right?
(I looked at the reference pictures and drew some shapes, then I used the paper to protect my desk from glue. Classy.)

So instead of writing a tutorial I’m going to link the reference photos I used. Then show you a lot of pictures, try to explain what I did, and call it a production diary.
Sounds cool?
One more thing before we get cracking:
I’d just like to say that I don’t have much experience with foam. I made a belt out of the stuff for my Robin cosplay, but that’ pretty much it. Also I’m broke, and I only decided that I was really going to do this the day  I did it.
Bottom line: There is probably a better way to do what I did, but I’ll becha there isn’t a cheaper way.

First things first.
I started by looking at reference pictures and cuting out the pieces for the crown of the helmet.

Then I pulled out my glue gun and hot glued it all together.
 (Ignore the freaky dead-eyed stare)

I fixed the top of the eye holes and added the bottom of the eyeholes.
(Also I glued the green piece to the bottom of the eye holes. However it wasn't straight so I had to cut it off and try again.)

I cut and glued the bottom of the mask. See what an odd shape it is?

I fixed it by heating it up
(holding it in front of my heater
(you can see it in the background))
and then putting on the helmet and pressing it to my face.
(When you do this don't heat it up too much
otherwise you can say goodbye to the skin on your face)

OKAY!
Now for the back! If you look you'll see that it
has four tiers that are pointed in the middle.

I folded the foam in half and cut it to shape.

Then I glued the tiers into place.
(Not perferct, the top should have come to a point)

I found a pin on the floor near my desk
so I used it to keep the points in place while I glued the ends.

 What it looks like on.

I was so pleased with how it was all coming
together that I took this picture for Facebook.

So classy. Love the colours.

I wanted to renforce the foam so I took these
baby zip ties and glued them on the inside of the helmet.

This is what the inside of the helm looks like.
I didn't want the zip ties to poke my skull so I covered
them with left over pieces of foam.
 #crummypic

Okkkaaaayyyy so for the scales
I folded the foam and cut out scale like shapes.

 Crazy story:
My glue gun ran out of glue and I was in the zone
and I didn't want to get up and walk the 10 steps to the closet
to get more so I used the white glue I had on my desk.

 Sandwich!

I knew from my Robin cosplay that to get even colour
I would have to prime the foam.
So prime I did, a bit of white glue and some white paint.

Then I added the little details.

 Painted it.

I organized the scales in three rows according to size.

And glued them on.

From start to finish this thing two almost four hours! But you know, totally worth it!

It's so pretty! I can't wait to start on the rest of the costume :)

Monthly Report Cards: (January) 2015 GOALS

Haha look at me almost a week in January and no plans for what I'd like to accomplish this month. Since it is the first week month of the year I guess I'll include some long-term goals.

Goals for the Month:

Finish Johanna's Smaug dress
Just have to add a few more scales to the bodice and then I'm done. The head dress and the wings can wait. :)

Clean up my room
There are three separate areas that could use some attention. (ie the computer desk, my shelf and under my bed (ewwww)) plus I guess the floor could be washed and the spiders vacuumed....

2015 Goals

Read 100 books
My average for the past two school years has been about 50.

Play a musical instrument at least once every week
What can I say? I've caught the music bug again.

Make a Friend

Make another cosplay
I’m thinking a fem! Hiccup from HTTYD2 (though the movie is not as good as the first one!).  I’ve been wanting to try my hand at foam armor for a while now. This might just be perfect ;)

I haven't really spent a lot of time thinking about this (maybe it's obvious?). These are all off the top of my head. I may add things as I go.
Or I might not.

Don't hold your breath ;)

Monthly Report card: December 2014 REPORT

Don’t spend the month feeling homesick and wishing I was in Alberta.
I'm from where? 10/10

Read at least two Bible books
Hahahhahahhaha funny. I'm still working on finishing Luke.

Have a photo shoot
I did - sort of. It snowed New Years Eve-Day so I went out and played in the snow.

Make something

I started Johanna's Lady Smaug dress, it's going very well :)

Write that stupid English paper

In a word: nope.

Yay read Johanna's report here
