Well our trip started out OK. We left the house and drove to
the border, Turkish customs were a breeeeze then we went on to the Greek customs.
There they wanted a green paper for the car that we hadn’t been given. So back
we went to the Turkish customs. Mom and Dad got it sorted out while Johanna,
Sam and I wandered around the tiny ‘Duty Free’ shopping mall with about 10
different stores.
Once we got across
the border we were fine. It was pretty
green in Greece and rather hilly. We drove, and drove, and drove and drove.
THEN we stopped at a sign and the sign pointed out a piece of a Roman road.
That was cool, we walked on it. It was rocky and uneven, but hey! It’s only
been around for a very long time. Then
we got back in and drove and drove and drove and drove then we drove. Then we found a little town with a café. So
we had lunch at the little café, and tried not to feed the 5 cats and 2 dogs
that showed up to watch us eat.
Lunch was good and
after we followed a sign that said that there was an archeology site 6K away.
We followed it and drove and and and, then there was another sign that listed
the stuff to see. We chose the medieval tower, but we started to get concerned
when the road when rocky and not so great. BUT we kept on (mostly because Dad
couldn’t turn around without knocking down the fence or mowing down a lot of
bushes) eventually we found the tower. It was about 10 feet tall and in pretty
good shape, Johanna and I climbed on it. It was very easy to climb seeing as
there were lots of foot and/or hand holds.
Then we drove to Alexandropoli where we got a Hotel room. FASTFORWARD after supper we watched Ironman 2
which was……..interesting.
THE NEXT MORNING
We three were up before mom knocked on the door (which is
what usually wakes us up when we are traveling.) I felt like I had been hit by
a bus, but Johanna and Sam were pretty chipper.
After breakfast we hopped in the car and drove and tried to
find about 5 different things that we wanted to see. But most of the signs were
in Greek and we only found 2. We used the map and we asked 2 people before we
found the Byzantine Castle we were looking for. It was within the town, pretty
awesome if you ask me. By the time we
finished the castle it was about 5pm, we had driven around the mountains all
day and it was time to head to the border.
Once we crossed the border we headed home via a
bridge, which is in the town of Uzunköprü. The bridge is named (oddly) Long Bridge; our guide book says it's 1392m long. We drove across it. It is indeed a long bridge.
